Apartments
Community
Action, Inc. manages three affordable housing complexes, and is the general
partner of the LLC of a fourth housing complex, in Central and Northeast Kansas.
They are:
McKinley Apartments, Clay Center, KS
The
McKinley Apartments, housed in a former school building, were established in
2000 to provide affordable housing to qualified residents in and near Clay
Center. The McKinley Apartments is the only affordable housing in Clay Center
and one of the major affordable apartment complexes in the Ft. Riley, KS area.
Given the housing shortage in the area, the McKinley Apartments have become the
only viable housing choice for many.
Five
new units were added to the third floor of the complex and dedicated on March 3.
The new units consist of one 1-bedroom unit, two 2-bedroom units, and two
2-bedroom units with a bonus room. These units are larger, overlook downtown
Clay Center and have washer/dryer hookups.
In
addition to the new third-floor units, the old gym and explosion-proof boiler
room were converted into a storm shelter. Those improvements were dedicated the
same day as the third-floor additions.

Meriden Heights, Meriden, KS
Meriden
Heights is a 12-unit affordable housing complex featuring four 3-bedroom and
eight 2-bedroom units organized as duplexes. Each unit has an attached garage
and is handicapped accessible. The 3-bedroom units have patios.
Meriden
Heights is a result of the State of Kansas extending tax credits to Community
Action. A limited liability corporation, Meriden Heights LLC, has been formed to
manage the project. Strawn Construction, from Hutchinson, Kans., was chosen as
the contractor for Meriden Heights. Strawn has built complexes similar to
Meriden Heights in other cities.
On
Oct. 24, 2008, Community Action staff, Manske and Associates (the complex’s
developer), and Meriden city officials market the ceremonial opening of the
complex.
